SIM 4810 Geothermal Power Plant

SIM 4810 Geothermal Power Plant

SIM 4830 Geothermal Power Plant is an interactive training simulation representing a Single Flash geothermal power generation facility. The model enables users to explore the full thermodynamic and operational cycle of converting geothermal energy into electrical power within a controlled, risk-free environment.

Designed for operator training and engineering education, the simulation provides hands-on experience of managing steam production, turbine control, grid synchronisation, and reinjection processes. Users gain a practical understanding of how geothermal resources are harnessed to generate reliable, low-carbon electricity while maintaining safe and efficient plant operation.

About the sim

Model Description

The model represents a Single Flash geothermal power plant supplied by a high-temperature geothermal reservoir. Pressurised water is injected into deep boreholes where it is heated by naturally hot rock formations. The heated fluid returns to the surface through production wells at elevated pressure and temperature.

At the surface, the high-pressure geothermal fluid enters a flash separator where a portion of the fluid rapidly vaporises into steam due to a pressure drop. The generated steam is routed to a steam turbine, which drives an electrical generator. The generator is connected through a transformer and switchgear system to an external electricity grid. Stable grid connection is achieved by controlling turbine rotational speed via a steam inlet control valve, ensuring frequency and voltage alignment.

The exhaust steam from the turbine is condensed and the resulting condensate, along with separator flash liquid, is reinjected into the geothermal reservoir. This closed-loop process maintains reservoir pressure and ensures sustainable resource utilisation.

The simulation includes control of wellhead pressures, flash vessel operation, turbine load control, and reinjection pumps, allowing users to experience both normal operations and transient conditions such as startup, shutdown, and process disturbances.
