FPSO Training Simulator| SIM 5300

Oil and gas separation is only part of the story on an FPSO. Production, gas processing, storage, offloading and utilities all depend on one another, and operators need to understand those connections.

What happens when a process upset affects downstream operations? How should a team respond to a partial shutdown? And how can learners develop that understanding before taking responsibility for live equipment?

TSC’s SIM 5300 FPSO brings these challenges into the training environment, giving learners practical experience of a complete Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel.

One of the newer additions to our simulation range, SIM 5300 supports learning from the fundamentals of offshore production through to advanced troubleshooting and emergency management.

Follow the process from wellhead to offloading

Learning how individual items of equipment work is essential. Understanding how they operate together takes that knowledge further.

SIM 5300 is a full asset process simulation that enables learners to explore the connected systems involved in oil and gas recovery on an FPSO. These include:

  • Production and separation: wellheads, manifolds and three-phase separation, including a test separator.
  • Oil handling: oil pumping, hull storage tanks, inter-tank transfers, tanker operations and offloading.
  • Gas processing: compression, glycol dehydration, glycol regeneration and gas reinjection.
  • Utility systems: power generation, instrument air, drains, produced water, seawater systems, etc
  • Emergency systems: full fire and gas systems, emergency shutdown systems enable MEMIR processes to be practiced

This breadth creates opportunities to connect process theory with operating decisions. Learners can develop their understanding of each area while exploring its role within the wider vessel.

Build skills from first principles to complex operations

For someone new to FPSO operations, the first challenge is understanding the process: where fluids go, what equipment does and how systems are controlled.

For a more experienced learner, the focus shifts towards recognising abnormal behaviour, diagnosing problems and selecting an appropriate response.

SIM 5300 supports both stages. Training can progress from an introduction to individual process areas through to complex process control, automated sequences and pressure protection systems.

Start-up procedures are another key learning area, covering both individual plant sections and the entire vessel. This helps learners move beyond knowing the steps to understanding the operating relationships behind them.

Practise the situations that test understanding

Normal operation provides a foundation. Plant upsets and shutdowns reveal how well that knowledge can be applied.

SIM 5300 supports training in responding to unusual operating conditions, turndown and plant malfunctions, alongside efficient recovery from partial shutdowns.

These scenarios give learners opportunities to investigate what has changed, consider the implications and practise their response in a simulated environment, without disrupting live production.

For instructors, they provide a practical basis for discussion: what caused the problem, why was a particular action chosen, and what should happen next?

Bring utilities into the training picture

Production depends on the systems supporting it. SIM 5300 includes utilities such as power generation turbines, fuel gas let-down, instrument air, hot oil, seawater lift and water injection.

Compressor driver turbines, waste heat recovery and firewater systems are also included.

By bringing these systems into the same training model, instructors can help learners understand their importance to FPSO operation and develop a broader view of plant behaviour.

Extend learning to emergency management

SIM 5300 also incorporates an integrated fire and gas system alongside a full emergency shutdown system, enabling its use for Major Emergency Management training.

This extends the scope beyond routine process operation, supporting training that considers emergency response alongside the production systems involved.

Bring FPSO operations into your training programme

For training providers, colleges, universities and offshore operations teams, SIM 5300 offers a way to develop learning around a connected FPSO process—from introductory principles to demanding operational scenarios.

Help your learners understand the process, practise their decisions and build confidence before applying their knowledge offshore.
