Operator Training Simulators: Training for Real Plant Operations
Some of the most important situations an operator needs to understand are also the situations you don’t want them experiencing for the first time on a live plant.
This is where an Operator Training Simulator (OTS) becomes particularly valuable.
An OTS uses dynamic process simulation to reproduce the behaviour of a real process and its control system, giving operators an environment in which they can practice operating procedures and respond to changing plant conditions without affecting production or equipment.
Practise normal operations
Operator training isn’t only about emergencies.
Simulation allows operators to build familiarity with everyday procedures including:

- Normal operation
- Process changes

Procedures can be practised repeatedly, allowing operators to build familiarity and confidence.

Faults, equipment failures and process upsets can be introduced while the instructor monitors how the operator responds.
Sessions can then be reviewed to identify areas for further training.
Training without affecting the plant
Perhaps the biggest advantage is simple: operators can learn by doing.
They can make decisions, see the consequences and repeat scenarios in an environment where mistakes become learning opportunities rather than operational incidents. They can do this in an immersive environment that matches the real-life plant and it’s control systems in every way, except a mistake doesn’t cost lives or money.
